What is replication in Apache Kafka®, and why does it matter? Kafka replication is a core part of Kafka’s durability and high-availability strategy, ensuring that your data has multiple copies spread across distributed servers and brokers. How replication works: Data replication happens at the topic level. Partitioning takes a single topic log and breaks it into multiple logs, which makes it easier to store messages, write new ones, and process existing ones across all the nodes within a Kafka cluster. For more details about Replication in Kafka, go to: https://cnfl.io/kafka-on-the-go-replication Kris Jenkins (Senior Developer Advocate, Confluent) explains that Kafka achieves durability of your data by writing copies of your data to multiple nodes. When an event gets produced, the write has to be acknowledged by those other nodes before we consider it truly written. At that point, even if a node dies, the data will still be saved elsewhere, and that means it’s durable - data survives disk failure. The same process is used for high availability. Since there are multiple, redundant copies of the data available, should a lead node die, another one can take over, using its perfect copy to continue working seamlessly.
